Experimental Video
The subject of my experimental is showcasing personality through home. Originally I had started by using Jeremy Blake’s Winchester video as inspiration. My aunt whom lives in Largo is fully the entire troupe of the “cool aunt”. She has always walked to the beat of her drum, done what she wants to do, and is just a really cool person whom I greatly look up to and love very much. She has a wonderfully whimsical home that seems to me, is packed at every turn with a little bit of her. However her trinkets and interior design isn’t overpowering or distasteful. So I wanted to show her house and all the wonderfully nuanced things in her home, while also showing some sort of story. I wanted to play with some effects like Blake did in his, while still maintaining this wonderful decor and relics she has everywhere. Every single thing in my aunts house has a story. She has traveled everywhere you can think of and her home reflects that as well as color. It seems like people are so scared of surrounding themselves in color and I heard a quote once by the director of Emma.(2020) who said “why would you tell these beautiful stories of love, loss, and life, without showing color” and I feel her understanding of surroundings and setting, as well as my Aunts, was something I wanted to illustrate here. I wanted to incorporate music and have that be symbolism itself. I chose the first song as an excerpt from Jat-Z’s 444 song. It has this wonderful expert of a young man singing as well as maya Angelou speak about love and I felt it was so fitting. I wanted the music to carry into the effects done too. I used some videos of my boyfriend to kind of push that storyline spoken about by Maya. My aunt also has this absolutely epic painting on her patio and by her words she “wanted it to be trippy and cool, but not scare her grandkids”. I wanted to show the pool in day and night and have some juxtaposition there. I wanted to show dark and light, life and death. She has a picture of her parents in the entry, and the clip after is actually their ashes (housed in the person looking pot) which I don’t find jarring or inappropriate at all. I feel it's just a way for my aunt to feel her family with her. My aunt’s decorating is beautiful, whimsical, playfull, and makes me marvel in wonder and pride. I just wanted to show that while also showing what kind of space people live in and how they express themselves. My aunt is someone so important to me, and I really didn’t know her until I was grown. I love who she is and feel that others should see how you can show your own color in your life.
