100 Years of Rock

Wow this interactive board to show the evolution of sound is so interesting. I found this really informative as far as understanding where most genres came from and how there are so many informed by others. I tried to test myself to see what songs I knew (I am huge 70's/80's lover) so it was great to see some songs I knew and some I didn't. I loved to see the Beatie Boys have their own genre. They are truly a sound that was created by so many genres to make their own sound (punk, rap, and rock) and it seems like more artists my age are doing that same thing to hear the music they want to hear.

  1. Kid Bloom-Electric U Alternative/Indie
    • Why did you choose this artist?
      • Kid Bloom is likely one of my favorite bands, as they are consistent with a sound that I like and have some really beautiful songs that just make me really happy.
    • Why do you consider their work fits with technology and electronic music in their context?
      • I feel that Kid Bloom is new age funk with heavy use of tech in creating their music. I think they do have an indie feel but they also are almost a new age version of funk, indie, and even some rock. This group is a major clash of some wonderful genres and its clear they have used other genres to create a new sound. The use bass in a really nice way that really adds to the funk feel.
  2. Tom Misch- Disco Yes New-Age Disco/Pop
    • Why did you choose this artist?
      • This band, and mainly the lead vocalist/guitarist, is such a talent when it comes to using instruments that are normally used in jazz, to make an almost new age disco sound. I really like the fusion used with the guitar as well as vocals. Poppy Ajudha, who features on this son, is a great soul singer so her sound adds a new element to this song.
    • Why do you consider their work fits with technology and electronic music in their context?
      • This band does a lot of mixing with the use of electric piano. Tom Misch is known for layering tons of sound as well as being founded on soundcloud, so he is really at the roots a tech heavy performer.
  3. Doja Cat- Rule Girl Power
    • Why did you choose this artist?
      • I really love the huge influx of female artists signing about FEMALE GAZE instead of the traditional men singing about male gaze. I feel that Doja Cat is an artist who is careful with what kind of lyrics she puts out and what they mean to empower women.Women need to hear music about them, for them, showing strength and power.
    • Why do you consider their work fits with technology and electronic music in their context?
      • Doja Cat is an artist also founded on soundcloud and became popular after she taught herself how to use sound edit software, making her own beats, using her own vocals in varieties, and writing and singing her own raps. She is totally a millennial in the way she creates her music.
  4. Tame Impala- Lost in Yesterday Psychedelic pop
    • Why did you choose this artist?
      • I am huge fan of Kevin Parker. He is such a talent and I personally am so drawn to his sound. He has yet to make an album that I don't love and he truly uses groovy and funk influence to make it popular. I was a fan before he was well known, and he keeps making sound that people love and has gained notoriety.
    • Why do you consider their work fits with technology and electronic music in their context?
      • Tame Impala, more so Kevin Parker, is a musical genius. He writes and creates every part to a song (Guitar, vocal, piano, drums) and records himself, then has people play those parts as he sings. His sound is centered around tech and how it informs his creation of sound.
      • PS, though so much of his music is tech based, he is a really great live performer.
  5. Beastie Boys- Song for the Man Indie Rock
    • Why did you choose this artist?
      • I did not know who the Beatie Boys were until I read their memoir last year, and I was totally and utterly in love. They were boys my age, who made a sound of their own, and got paid to do so. Though they started as a punk band, then rap, all while being unique. I chose this song particularly because it is nothing like their traditional sound. In later years, they strayed away from their Rap Core roots and tried to reinvent themselves. I think this song is very indie rock and a wonderful message too.
    • Why do you consider their work fits with technology and electronic music in their context?
      • The Boys are known to sample so many different kinds of sounds to incorporate into their songs, which is unique on their own. So that use of sampling is a great example of teach in music. This song is really beautiful and has a wonderful piano and band sound.
