Pierre Huyghe Comments

2. Watch the Art21 Video on Pierre Huyghe and post your comments to your blogs. Make sure to identify and discuss at least three kinds of media that Huyghe uses.  i.e. video, photography, etc.

Pierre Huyghe is a notable artist who puts forth lots of thought and intention into his installations or "worlds" he creates. He creates a new reality and his art is documenting these shared and crafted realties.

  1. The first media I found most interesting was Huyghe's moving door exhibit that showed two doors on a different tract, so there was no way to tell what was the threshold and what was not. I found this to be a very interesting look at how we define walking in from one reality to the next. You don't realize when you are leaving one "world" and beginning into the next. This exhibit was smart and beautiful.
  2. He created a "video" or moreso a play that involved puppets called This is not a time for dreaming (2004). This is a satire kind of film that depicts a parallel of himself, the artist, and the architect Le Corbusier’s commission for a arts center at Harvard. The two artists; Huyghe and Corbusier, are shown each commissioning an exhibit. Each artist struggles with this inner "dark figure" that shows the inner questions and doubts, as well as beautiful humor that is at the foundation of creativity.
  3. A second short film Huyghe created showed the connection we have to nature. It centers around a deer being pulled from nature, to this new home development. The deer is contrasted in a white base of simplicity, where there is no complexity. The town then celebrates the nature that they are living on and in a sense "stealing from".
It seems that Pierre has a different kind of look at creativity, specifically the process it takes to create. Much like Raul Cuero, Huyghe also looks at the process, enjoys it, and uses more of start point to create even more. Whereas other artists see the end goal being the exhibit, there is so much more to that world you can create, or allow it to aid in creating a new reality.
